During treatment, the root canals are reamed to remove the tooth nerves. Gutta-perchas are inserted to fill the root. These are then cut off, sealed, and the tooth filled. The abscess will reduce. A crown might be necessary later down the line if the affected tooth was a premolar or molar, responsible for a significant proportion of the chewing you do. A bespoke crown can also improve the appearance of a tooth after root canal treatment, restoring its shade (which can become grey due to a dental infection).
